Thieves have targeted the cryptocurrency casino Stakecom co-founded by Australia’s youngest self-made billionaire, in a major heist of tokens worth US$413 million. In the early hours of Tuesday morning, the blockchain security platform Cyvers had detected US$16 million of suspicious transactions which were later confirmed by the blockchain analyst ZACHXBT to be an additional US$261 million. The Stakecom team, consisting of Ed Craven and Bijan Tehrani with Eamon Gallagher as their spokesperson, immediately released a statement confirming the theft of funds from its ethereum hot wallet. A hot wallet is a crypto storage wallet that is connected to the internet and linked to customer’s accounts. Stakecom was quick to reassure customers that their funds were safe and operational other wallets remain fully operational. Although user funds were safe, the company paused all services whilst they investigated and increased security measures. Shameela Gonzalez, the Financial Services Director at CyberCX, warned of similar cases and suggested that the crypto industry may be more prone to attack due to the lack of regulatory oversight.

Stakecom are now working with authorities to get the stolen tokens returned.
